The Met Office has issued an Amber warning for extreme heat across Greater Manchester this week, with hot and humid weather expected through the middle of the week and unusually warm temperatures both day and night in Park Bridge.
Park Bridge is a beautiful place to walk, explore and enjoy the outdoors, and during hot weather we know more people are likely to visit. We want everyone to enjoy the area, but to do so safely and responsibly.
With extreme heat, dry grassland and increased visitor numbers, there are two key risks we’re asking everyone to take seriously: water safety and fire safety.
Please do not enter the River Medlock
We know the river can look tempting during hot weather, but the River Medlock is not safe for swimming or paddling.
Please do not enter the water. The river can carry pollution and poor water quality risks, and there may also be hidden dangers beneath the surface, including sharp debris, uneven ground, sudden drops and strong currents.
The safest choice in Park Bridge is simple: enjoy the river from the bank, but please stay out of the water.
No disposable barbecues or open fires
Park Bridge also has areas of dry grassland, woodland edges and natural habitat that can become extremely vulnerable during hot, dry conditions.
Please do not use disposable barbecues, open fires, camping stoves or fire pits in Park Bridge.
The National Fire Chiefs Council has warned that many wildfires are started by everyday actions, including disposable barbecues and carelessly discarded smoking materials. During a heatwave, what begins as a small fire can spread quickly and become a serious incident.
Please also take extra care with cigarettes, matches and glass bottles, which can all create fire risks in dry vegetation.
Help protect Park Bridge’s wildlife and habitats
Park Bridge is home to a unique natural environment, including important local habitats and wildlife. Extreme heat can place additional pressure on green spaces, rivers and wildlife, so small actions from visitors make a big difference.
Please help by:
- taking all litter home with you
- avoiding disposable barbecues and open flames
- keeping dogs under control around wildlife and livestock
- staying out of the River Medlock
- keeping to paths where possible
- reporting any fire immediately by calling 999
Look after yourself and others
Extreme heat can affect everyone, not only those considered most vulnerable. If you are visiting Park Bridge during the warning period, please plan ahead.
Bring water, avoid the hottest part of the day where possible, wear sun protection, and check on children, older people, pets and anyone who may struggle in the heat.
Enjoy Park Bridge, but please help us keep it safe
We want people to enjoy Park Bridge. It is a special place, and hot weather naturally brings more people outdoors.
But during this extreme heat warning, we’re asking everyone to be sensible, responsible and respectful.
Please stay out of the River Medlock, do not light barbecues or fires, take your litter home, and help protect Park Bridge for everyone.
